 Punjab State Backward Classes Commission(PSBCC) Chairman Malkit Thind on Thursday directed officials to ensure that the benefits of welfare schemes meant for Backward Classes (BC) reach every eligible beneficiary in a timely and transparent manner.

Chairing a review meeting with senior officials of various departments at the Circuit House here, Thind called for effective implementation of welfare schemes being run by the Centre and Punjab Government for the socio-economic upliftment of the BC community. He also directed officials to ensure that there was no delay in issuing BC certificates and that beneficiaries were properly informed about income criteria and creamy-layer provisions.

Thind said the objective of welfare schemes could be achieved only when eligible beneficiaries were able to access them without unnecessary procedural hurdles. He directed officials to address gaps in implementation on priority and ensure that no eligible person was deprived of government benefits due to lack of information.

The Chairman also interacted with representatives of the BC community and social organisations and heard their grievances and suggestions. Several cases were resolved on the spot, while officials were directed to dispose of the remaining matters within the stipulated timeframe.

He stressed the need for wider awareness of welfare schemes in villages and urban areas and called for simplification of the process so that people were not required to make unnecessary visits to government offices.

ADC (G) Anuprita Johal assured the Chairman that the district administration would ensure effective implementation of all welfare schemes in accordance with the Commission’s directions.

District Social Justice and Empowerment Officer Kulwinder Kaur, District Social Security Officer Varinderjit Singh Tiwana, District Education Officer Shalu Mehra and officials of various departments, besides representatives of social organisations and the BC community, attended the meeting.
