Mohali, December 16
Unidentified assailants opened fire on a kabaddi team promoter during a tournament in Sector 82 around 6 pm on Monday, shooting him in the head at point-blank range.
The victim has been identified as Kanwar Digvijay Singh (30), also known as Rana Balachauriya, a kabaddi player and promoter of the Shakkarpur kabaddi team.
Two unidentified youths fired four rounds after approaching the victim under the pretext of taking a selfie. They led him aside near the parking lot and then shot him at point-blank range.
His friends rushed him to a private hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. As the armed assailants fled, they fired shots into the air to scare youths who attempted to chase them.
Senior police officials reached the spot soon and launched an investigation, while a forensic team collected samples from the crime scene.
Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans said preliminary investigations suggest the involvement of two to three assailants who fired four rounds before fleeing the spot. He added that a few people attempted to chase and apprehend the attackers, but they fired into the air to scare them off and escaped on a motorcycle.
The SSP said police are also probing the case from a possible gang war angle and have identified the assailants.
Meanwhile, the organisers said the tournament had been called off. The victim was recently married.
