Jalandhar, December 25
The parents of a 23-year-old man who went missing from Punjab’s Jalandhar district in November have claimed that their son is in the custody of the Pakistani Rangers after inadvertently crossing the Indo-Pakistan border.
They have appealed to the Centre to intervene and ensure his safe return to India.
Sharandeep Singh, a resident of Bhoypur village near Shahkot in Jalandhar, went missing on November 2 and has not returned since. His father, Satnam Singh, said on Wednesday that the family learned through social media that Sharandeep had been apprehended by Pakistani Rangers.
According to Satnam Singh, Sharandeep left home on November 2 along with his friend Mandeep Singh. He added that his son may have crossed the border unintentionally under the influence of drugs.
He said Sharandeep was a good wrestler, but after injuring his hand in a fight with some youths, he slipped into depression and eventually became addicted to drugs.
“On November 2, he left the house with his friend. We thought he would be in Shahkot,” Satnam Singh said.
When Sharandeep did not return, his parents began searching for him. His father said that when he questioned Mandeep about his son’s whereabouts, the latter initially did not disclose anything. He added that later developments led the family to suspect that Sharandeep may have crossed the border inadvertently.
