Chandigarh, December 17
One of the three accused in the murder of kabaddi team promoter Kanwar Digvijay Singh, also known as Rana Balachauria, was killed in a police encounter near Lalru on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Harbhinder Singh, alias Maddi. According to the police, he was neutralised during an exchange of fire on the Ambala–Chandigarh National Highway near Lalru. Maddi was also wanted in several other firing incidents in Tarn Taran and was an active operative of foreign-based gangster Doni Bal.
During the encounter, a police official, Gulab Singh, sustained injuries. As many as 12 teams from the Punjab Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF), the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), and the district police had been searching for the accused for the past two days.
Police said the hunt is continuing for the remaining two suspects, Aditya Kapoor and Karan Pathak, who allegedly shot dead Kanwar Digvijay Singh in Mohali on Monday evening. Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans also reached the spot following the encounter.
On Monday, four rounds were fired by two youths, who approached Kanwar Digvijay Singh with a request for a selfie and led him aside before shooting him at point-blank range in the head near the parking lot. While fleeing, a few persons tried to chase and nab them but the assailants fired shots in the air to scare them.
After the incident, the Gopi Ghanshyampuria gang had claimed responsibility for the murder in a social media post.
